To optimize achievement, S.T.E.P. uses a unique
approach that integrates these key elements:
• 1:1 Instruction: fully interactive, direct 1:1 instruction
to address individual learning needs and differences
and promote most consolidated and rapid skills
development
• Customized Programs: customized curricula and
lessons that target skills for each learner’s educational/occupational objectives – combining
elements of different programs as indicated
• Special Education: special instructional strategies
designed to capitalize on learning strengths and
compensate for learning challenges; adjusted lesson demands, rates and sequences that respond to
fluctuations in concentration/attention
• Adult Education: adult-oriented program
methodologies and materials; a facilitative, collaborative approach to the teaching-learning process
• Vocational Rehabilitation: programs that prepare for
specific employment goals and prerequisite applied
training (e.g., based on HRSDC’s Essential Skills Profiles,
NOC, and information from professional organizations and training
institutions); supportive instruction that respects the unique
needs of learners with disabilities as they work toward re-entering
the labour market
